Dirt Made My Lunch (Chorus) Dirt made my lunch. Dirt made my lunch. Thank you, dirt, thanks a bunch – for my salad, my sandwich, my milk and my munch Cause dirt, you made my lunch. Dirt is a word we often use, when we’re talking about the earth beneath our shoes. It’s a place where plants can sink their toes, and in a little while a garden grows. (Chorus) A farmer’s plow will tickle the ground. You know the earth has laughed when wheat is found. The grain is taken and flour is ground for making a sandwich to munch on down. (Chorus) A stubby green beard grows upon the land. Out of the soil, the grass will stand. But under hoof it must bow for making milk by way of a cow. (Chorus) Written by S. Van Zandt Performed by: The Banana Slug String Band © 1989 Slug Music (BMI)

(Chorus) Everybody’s doing the solar energy shout…SOLAR ENERGY Everybody’s doing the solar energy shout…SOLAR ENERGY We can do it all day because we never, never will run out…SOLAR ENERGY Oil is scarce and coal, it dirties the air…SOLAR ENERGY Nuclear waste is a chance we’d rther not dare…SOLAR ENERGY So, now is the hour solar power is everywhere…SOLAR ENERGY (Chorus) The plants use the sun; just ask the birds in the trees…SOLAR ENERGY The sun moves the seas just by movin’ the breeze…SOLAR ENERGY If it wasn’t for the sun, we’d all be in a deep freeze…SOLAR ENERGY (Chorus) If it wasn’t for the sun, fire would’ve never been found…SOLAR ENERGY There would be no oil pumped from out of the ground…SOLAR ENERGY The sky would be lonely without any clouds around…SOLAR ENERGY (Chorus) The sun is the reason that this whole world can live…SOLAR ENERGY The sun never takes; it’s always willing to give…SOLAR ENERGY Let’s meet the sun, learn to live and to give…SOLAR ENERGY (Chorus) We can do it all day because we never, never will run out…SOLAR ENERGY (2 times)

(Chorus) Roots, stems, leaves, flowers, fruits and seeds Roots, stems, leaves, flowers, fruits and seeds Roots, stems, leaves, flowers, fruits and seeds Roots, stems, leaves, flowers, fruits and seeds That’s six parts, six parts, six plant parts that plants and people need The roots hold the plant in the ground They gather up the water that falls around And there’s a root inside of me Because a carrot is a root that I eat. That’s six parts, six parts, six plant parts that plants and people need A stem is an elevator growing up from the ground The water goes up and the sugar back down And there’s a stem inside of me Because celery is a stem that I eat. The leaves are kitchens where the food is donr They breathe the air and catch rays from the sun. And there’s a leaf inside of me Because lettuce is a leaf that I eat. The flowers are dressed so colorfully They hold the pollen and attract the bees. And there’s a flower inside of me Because cauliflower is a flower I eat. The fruit gets ripe, then falls on down. It holds the seeds and feeds the ground And there’s a fruit inside of me Because an apple is a fruit that I eat. (Chorus) The seed gets buried in the earth And the cycle starts again with a new plant’s birth And there are seeds inside of me Because sunflower is a seed that I eat. Now you know what this whole worlds needs It’s roots, stems, leaves, flowers, fruits and seeds. There’s six plant parts inside of me Because a garden salad is what I eat.

I'm a Tree 02:34
I’m a tree, I’m a tree and I’m growing very tall. I’m a tree, can’t you see me shake my leaves? I’m a tree, I’m a tree and when the breezes blow in fall, I give a voice to the wind. I’m a tree, I’m a tree and I’m growing very tall. I’m a tree, can’t you see my branches spread? I’m a tree, I’m a tree, can you hear the robin call? I give a home to the birds. I give a voice to the wind. I’m a tree, I’m a tree and I’m growing very tall. I’m a tree, can’t you see my acorns grow? I’m a tree, I’m a tree, and when bushy tails crawl, I give food to the squirrels. I give a home to the birds. I give a voice to the wind. I’m a tree, I’m a tree and I’m growing very tall. I’m a tree, can’t you see my green leaves? I’m a tree, I’m a tree, and when the sun, it shines its all, I give shade to the world. I give food to the squirrels. I give a home to the birds. I give a voice to the wind. (All sing together) I give shade to the people of the world. I give shade to the people of the world (repeat)

River Song 04:10
It happened one day on the mountain so high A river was born from out of the sky The rain and the snow came falling down And started to run as they hit the ground (Chorus) Blurp ah pa-shoosh rumbly pound A white rapid river makes a wonderful sound In the short days of winter this river still flows Under the ice and the silence of snow As the sun rises higher the ice it wears thin Like a raft it floats down as the spring thaw begins. (Chorus) Over beds made of granite it sweeps and it rolls It is narrow and steep and so icy cold It carries small rocks and it grinds them to sand It carves out a valley and gouges the land (Chorus) It rushes along past steep canyon walls That echo the song (sound) of a canyon wren’s call Through a rainbow of flowers it bubbles and sings Feeding green meadows and the new life of spring (Chorus) Over flat colored stones it riffles along Kingfishers and frogs join in with its songs With rapids and falls, spray bursting in air This river brings life to salmon and bear (Chorus) A strider it glides where an eddy has turned Into dark pools in the shade of green ferns A dragonfly’s wings shine in the sun While a dipper bobs by a swift rocky run (Chorus) It meanders past farms and past a small town Where on warm summer days the children come down They tie an old rope to the limb of a tree And swing into the river feeling wild and free (Chorus) Their parents float in an afternoon dream Where orange lilies cling to the side of the stream In the shallows the toddlers splash as they wade While grandparents cool their feet in the shade (Chorus) Deer come to drink at the end of day’s light In the soft muddy banks are the footprints of night The current divides where a small creek comes in Around a rock bar it’s united again (Chorus) It fills up a lake and is still for a day But soon the wide river goes along on its way It rolls past rocks and banks lined with trees It carries small boats of fall covered leaves (Chorus) It rolls and it rolls ‘til it rolls past me It makes me smile for it’s wild and free I know it is happy for it’s wild and free But I wave it good bye as it enters the sea (Chorus) The water in the sea rises up to the sky And the wind blows a cloud to the mountain so high The rain and the snow come falling down And flow to the river as they hit the ground Blurp ah pa-shoosh rumbly pound A white rapid river makes a wonderful sound!

Prayer Song 03:08
Let me feel the wind. Let me feel the wind. Let me feel the wind. Oh, Great Being of Wonder Let me feel the sun. Let me feel the sun. Let me feel the sun. Oh, Great Being of Wonder Let the eagle fly. Let the eagle fly. Let the eagle fly. Oh, Great Being of Wonder Let me know all life. Let me know all life. Let me know all life. Oh, Great Being of Wonder Let my people love. Let my people love. Let my people love. Let them love each other.

Is there waste? Well I don’t know. One thing dies to let another grow. This circle we see most every day. The name that we call it is decay. (Chorus) Well, come all you people gather round. Breakdown and listen to decomposition. (Cross-lines) munch...munch...decomposition...get down, breakdown There are many kinds of bugs. Worms and snails and banana slugs They are useful for me and you. They help to make the soil renew. Decomposition is a useful game. A tree drops its leaves but they don’t stay the same. A bug chews them up and spits them back out. Making the soil for a new tree to sprout.
9.
Banana Slug 02:46
(Chorus) Banana Slug, Banana Slug, I like them, they’re beautiful Banana Slug, Banana Slug, They’re part of the circle. Sticky as peanut butter, shade of yellow, Look like banana and oh so mellow Good life givers, living on the ground, Chewing on leaves when they fall down. On the side of their head there’s an all-purpose hole, they’ve got one foot and plenty of soul. All day long they work and toil munching down duff to renew the soil. They make soil to grow new trees. Trees make air for us to breathe They’re part of the circle that lets things grow. So be kind to banana slugs and let things flow. If you’re walking down a path and see a slug, you can bend down and hold it, give it a hug You can pick it up it won’t bite or kick. You can show it that you like it just give it a lick. Banana slug, slug , slug, slug, slug, slug, Banana Slug!
10.
(Chorus) Newts, salamanders and frogs, oh yeah! Newts, salamanders and frogs, oh yeah! Living in ponds on lily pads and logs, Newts, salamanders and frogs. Amphibian life is living in ease, munching on bugs that fly with the breeze A fly fricassee, I’ll have another one please right here on the tip of my tongue. A smile and a grin is what amphibians wear, because they’re living a life with hardly a care. But that big black snake that lives over there is eating frog legs a la king. Legs and lungs and sticky tongues, pores in their skin and they like to swim. Crawlin’, croaking, leaping and eating insects a la carte. So the next time you feel like you haven’t a friend You can go to the pond and you can jump right in. It won’t be long ‘til you’ll be wearing a grin Like newts, salamanders and frogs.
11.
(Chorus) Bats eat bugs, they don’t eat people. Bats eat bugs, they don’t fly in your hair Bats eat bugs, they eat insects for dinner. That’s why they’re flying up there. Coyotes eat rabbits, they don’t eat people. Coyotes eat rabbits, ‘cuz you’re too big to bite Coyotes eat rabbits, they eat rabbits for dinner. That’s why they’re out in the night. Snakes eat mice, they don’t eat people. Snakes eat mice, that’s why they’re on the ground Snakes eat mice, ‘cuz we’re too big to swallow. So they don’t want you hanging around. Bears eat berries, they don’t eat people. Bears eat berries, they don’t eat you or me Bears eat berries, and they’ll steal your dinner, so you better hang it high in a tree. Nothing out there wants to eat you. Nothing out there wants to make you its meal Nothing out there eats people for dinner ‘cuz they know how sick they would feel
12.
(Chorus) Nocturnal animals, they come out at night. Sssh! Nocturnal animals, on the ground and some in flight. Sssh! Raccoon is a bandit who comes out when the sun goes down. When we are all asleep in bed he makes his normal rounds. He goes past the garbage cans, where he gets scraps to eat. He’s got eyes and ears and nose for the night and small but sensitive feet The owl she is a wise one, who knows how to find a meal. At night her silent wings swoop down and a mouse is what she’ll steal. She has two eyes that are locked in place but her head can turn around. She has 2 sharp ears that help her hunt, if her prey should make a sound. The coyote is a howler, in the late hours of dark. When the moon is full & bright you can hear his lonely bark. He likes to eat rabbits and mice, as well as berries and deer. He has a nose that helps him smell and ears that help him hear. People they are thinkers, who walk alone in the night. We think that things will get us, when the dark takes away our sight. Sometimes we get the “look-behinds” when there’s really nothing near. So the choice we make is in our head, so be brave or walk in fear.

Quail 02:15
Quail do, do, do, do, do, do with a topnotch, chicago, do, do ,do. I said, Quail do, do, do, do, do, do with a topnotch, chicago, do, do ,do. (Repeat) They’re California’s bird, have you heard? Singing in the brush, they’re always in a rush. They’ll run away from you, but before they go they’ll say to you “chicago” I said, Quail do, do, do... They like to run around, up and down. They’d rather run than fly, I don’t know why. They play hide and seek, on their feet. And that’s where they sing, not on the wing. I said Quail do, do....
14.
(Chorus) It’s so nice to be here with people I like. It’s so nice to hear them all say, That it’s so nice to be here with people I like and with them to share a new day It’s a new day we’re living in filled with bounty and praise. The cold and the darkness is driven away, while morning light blesses our days. The people I like are the people I find who live with a smile of care. Their looks and their lives are different than mine but together this new day we share. Time spent apart seems to fade away. Smiling faces warm us inside. We can talk without saying a word. Our love is deep it does not die.
